Who Are We?
Headquartered at 200 Main Street, Suite 5, Towanda PA, the Bradford Wyoming County Literacy Program provides FREE and confidential tutoring for adults who would like to improve their reading, writing, and/or math skills, or who would like to learn how to read, write, and/or speak English. We train volunteer tutors to provide one to one or small group instruction to adult learners in their communities and at a time that is best for the adult learner and the volunteer tutor. Most of our tutor-adult learner pairs meet once or twice per week for one to two hours per session, usually at the closest library.
HISTORY
The Bradford Wyoming County Literacy Program was founded in 1980 when six “Friends of the Bradford County Library” attended a training in Elmira, NY and decided they wanted to start a program in Bradford County. This group, including Fanna Proper, Joyce Strope Burgart, Sherry Spencer, and Julie Fluke, provided the groundwork for the creation of the Bradford Wyoming County Literacy Program. Sherry Spencer served as the Program Director for over 30 years until her retirement in 2014.
MISSION
The mission of the Bradford Wyoming County Literacy Program is to provide free and confidential instruction to adults in reading, writing, math, and English so they may reach their fullest potential in life and participate productively in their community.
VISION
We envision Bradford and Wyoming Counties to be counties where all residents have the literacy skills needed to achieve their own dreams and to enhance the quality of their lives in order to become better family members, employees, and community members.
